Know Thy Self
Why is happy the new rich? Well, the old saying “money doesn’t buy happiness” is a good start. Whether you’re working, enjoying hobbies, or studying for your next exam… it’s very important to understand the true purpose behind what you’re doing. How important? Pretty fuckin important if you work ~40 hours a week full-time for a good portion of your life. Studies show that happier people tend to be healthier people – of course you want to be healthy! So, you probably should be searching for happiness in your career as well as your life! We can do it by figuring out Rule #1: Know Thy Self…
To Know Thy Self means to understand what brings happiness to your life. Maybe you’re happy when you’re successful at work, giving back to your community, or reading a book. Find out what makes you happy, and seek it out!
Have you considered taking notes when you’re truly happy? Well, how will you know the source of your happiness?! Make your list…here are some examples:
- Catching up with an old friend
- Spending time with family
- Planning for the future (vacations, weekend plans…)
- Swimming / working out
- Relaxing with a good book
- Sleeping in
- Getting ahead at work
- Spending time with my pets
When you identify what you really enjoy doing, you can focus on making time in your schedule to actually do it. And when it comes to your career, maybe you’re the type of person that doesn’t need to enjoy their job… “it’s just a means to an end.” That’s great, and it’s something that YOU will benefit from determining.
Here’s a little trick related to work. Choose 3 of the 5 for your ideal job:
- Reasonable Hours (# of Hours in your work week)
- Location (where you work, if you travel often for work)
- Loving what you do for work
- Loving who you work with
By choosing 3 of these 5 in our work lives, we identify what aspects of our jobs make us happiest. Then, we can pursue a job that gives us the most important 3. I know we have bills and families and needs. But, a majority of us will work around 40 hours each week for a majority of our lives. Finding work that aligns with your strengths can be an incredible life-lift and truly bring you more happiness. Finding work that you see as positive and beneficial can also brighten your outlook during non-work hours.
Overall, you can really start to change your energy and your life by taking a better look at what you do in your free time. Does it align with what makes you happy? Create a list of activities and things that you want to do… and then you can start to focus your mind, energy, and time on doing what makes you happy the rest of your life.
Happiness is a gift, and life is far too short to be unhappy.
